Associate Professor in Civil Engineering

The School 

The School of Computing and Engineering at the University of West London is recognised for its innovation in both research and teaching. The School offers a vibrant academic community with courses in civil engineering, the built environment, computing, and audio technologies. Civil Engineering is a key subject area, with particular strengths in structural engineering, sustainable construction, and infrastructure planning. 

The School has strong industry links across the built environment, and its research supports applications in sustainable infrastructure, structural safety, and urban development. The School also houses the Faringdon Centre for Non-Destructive Testing, which brings together specialist facilities and interdisciplinary expertise to support applied research, innovation, and enterprise. 

The Role  

The University is seeking to appoint an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering with a focus on Structural Engineering. 

The postholder will: 

  • Provide academic leadership in Civil/Structural Engineering. 
  • Lead the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate curricula in structural engineering, aligned to accreditation standards. 
  • Play a key role in the School’s research strategy, securing external funding and producing internationally recognised publications. 
  • Supervise doctoral students and mentor early-career colleagues. 
  • Build partnerships with industry and professional bodies such as the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE). 
  • Contribute to the School’s collaborative networks such as WInSTEM and the Early Career Researcher Network. 

This is a senior academic role that will strengthen the School’s reputation in research, teaching, and knowledge exchange, and contribute to preparations for the REF 2029 submission. 

The Person 

Applicants should hold a PhD in Civil Engineering and have substantial teaching and research experience at higher education level or equivalent industrial standing. 

They should demonstrate: 

  • A strong record of publications and success in securing external research funding. 
  • Leadership in collaborative research with measurable impact. 
  • Extensive teaching experience in civil/structural engineering, including curriculum development. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build networks nationally and internationally. 
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in higher education. 

Desirable attributes include Chartered Engineer status (ICE/IStructE) and international or industry experience that enhances teaching and research.
