Functional Skills Maths Teacher Levels 1 and 2 - Hourly Paid Lecturer

The Department

The Study Support Team provides Functional Skills Maths and English opportunities to apprentices, students and the wider London population. The team also provides academic guidance and support to all current UWL students, peer mentoring opportunities, and pre-sessional English courses.

As an established Functional Skills provider consistently achieving pass rates above the national average, we are now seeking to expand our provision and continue to build on our successful Functional Skills programme.

The Role

The University of West London are looking for experienced Maths teachers to support with the delivery of our Functional Skills provision. We deliver English and Maths Functional Skills courses at Level 1 and Level 2, preparing students for Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills exams.

The successful candidate(s) will join our team and deliver engaging and effective Functional Skills Maths courses via live online delivery.

The successful candidate(s) will be employed on an hourly paid lecturer basis. Working hours are variable and will depend on the scheduling of online courses. Our 6/7-week 60-hour courses are delivered regularly throughout the year, and teachers are contracted on a course-by-course basis based on demand.

The Person

The successful candidate will have the following expertise and experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS, DET or equivalent) or substantial recent Functional Skills teaching experience.
  • Proven experience teaching Functional Skills Maths Level 1 and/or Level 2, including preparing learners for Pearson Edexcel assessments and supporting them to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Experience of preparing learners for Functional Skills examinations, including use of past papers and exam technique.  
  • Experience of delivering engaging live online teaching to adult learners using platforms such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
  • Experience of teaching adult learners with diverse educational backgrounds, including learners with maths anxiety or negative prior experiences of education.
  • Demonstrable track record of achieving strong Functional Skills Maths pass rates and learner outcomes.
