The Department / School / College

The William Brake Student Services department is an award-winning team which consists of Careers, Volunteering, Placements and Employment, Student Welfare, Wellbeing & Student Advice & Immigration. Our large multi-disciplinary team plays a crucial role in supporting our students. The Wellbeing Service is an umbrella term used to describe our various teams, Counselling, Disability & Mental Health, Student Welfare and Faith. We provide a holistic approach to student support to ensure students’ individual needs are fully met to enhance their academic success, aid student experience and develop each student as an individual. The Wellbeing team is a busy and in-demand service. 

The Wellbeing team has been successful in winning bids and awards and works collaboratively across the university with all stakeholders.  The service plays a key role in supporting students to achieve their full potential, by offering advice and guidance to help reduce any barriers to their success. Our student body is extremely diverse and because of the variety of support needs that our students have, our work can be fast-moving and occasionally challenging but very rewarding. Student Services is currently in a period of development and growth, so it is an exciting time to be joining the team

The Role 

The main purpose of the role is to provide strategic and operational leadership to the Wellbeing team at UWL.  It is essential that the postholder be able to articulate a vision and a strategy to ensure that this vital aspect of our student services is effective and on the leading edge of professional practice. In particular, the postholder should deliver a service that is proactive and support the students to be inclusive in the curriculum.

The postholder is part of the Student Services Management Team and is required to contribute their ideas and experience to the running of Student Services as a whole.  Furthermore, they will ensure that the work of the Wellbeing Service is routinely evaluated and analysed, providing data to contribute to wider University initiatives.

Applicants must have proven working knowledge in Higher Education and understand the needs of students covering a wide range of disabilities, mental health, SpLD Student Welfare (which requires extensive knowledge and experience of dealing with critical incidents in HE) and counselling.  Knowledge of current disability legislation, SLC funding and policy implementation is essential for this post, as is previous experience of working in an advisory role in the higher education sector.  

This post requires working from campus 5 days a week.

The Person

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of effective leadership and innovation within Higher Education. They will be empathetic, committed to understanding student needs, and work to improve student outcomes.  Working closely with students and staff at all levels in the University to ensure the wellbeing and legal contractual policies are delivered in a timely manner and to a very high standard. They will be able to articulate a clear vision and will have a strong understanding of current and emerging good practice within the HE sector.
